How Clean Water is Lifting Rural Sabah Families Out of Poverty

Deep within rural Sabah, particularly the Kadamaian area of Kota Belud, access to clean water remains a critical challenge for over 74 villages scattered across the rugged terrain.

These underserved communities struggle with poverty due to the lack of basic rural infrastructure, forcing families to either purchase water with their minimal earnings, or collect it from rivers and streams - often contaminated.

Without clean water, daily life becomes an ongoing struggle. Household tasks, economic activities, and overall well-being suffer—perpetuating the cycle of poverty.

However, through our non-governmental organization’s (NGO) impactful sustainable initiatives, Hopes Malaysia is empowering Sabah’s rural families with the skills, knowledge and tools to enhance their rural infrastructure. This particularly focuses on repairing and improving their damaged community gravity water systems through our corporate social responsibility (CSR) sustainable water projects, with like-minded sponsors and partners.

With reliable water access, villagers are not only improving their health but also transforming their livelihoods, breaking free from the grip of poverty and creating a brighter future for their children.

1. Boosting Agricultural and Livelihoods with Clean Water in Rural Sabah

Many rural families in Sabah face food insecurity and income challenges due to water scarcity. When water is inaccessible, communities struggle to engage in sustainable small-scale farming, which directly impacts their food supply and income.

By implementing reliable gravity water systems, rural communities now have steady water supply for farming. This enables them to cultivate more diverse crops, generate B40 households’ income growth, and move towards self-sufficiency.

2. Improving Health and Well-being

Access to clean water is crucial for health. Without it, many families are forced to collect water from unsafe sources, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea. Hopes Malaysia’s water initiatives ensure that villagers can access clean, safe water, dramatically improving hygiene and reducing health risks.

With reliable water at home, children can focus on their education, and parents can grow nutritious food to combat malnutrition. Clean water also promotes sanitation, helping families maintain better hygiene and reduce medical costs.

3. Empowering Women and Children

In rural Sabah, women and children often bear the responsibility of fetching water each day, walking long distances and sometimes spending hours carrying heavy loads. This affects children's educational priorities and limits women's ability to engage in income-generating activities (such as in traditional handicraft or sustainable farming).

With clean water directly accessible to homes, these burdens are lifted. Children can focus on their studies, while women gain more time to participate in income-generating activities, enhancing their economic participation and empowering them to contribute more to their communities.

4. Strengthening Community Resilience and Self-Sufficiency

Through our CSR-driven community empowerment projects, we ensure local villagers receive the necessary training to repair and maintain their gravity water supply systems. This ensures that water access remains a long-term solution, not just a temporary fix.

By equipping communities with the skills to manage their own water systems, they become more resilient against future challenges, fostering self-reliance and reducing poverty.
