In the heart of Sabah, Kota Belud stands out—not for wealth or development—but for poverty. It remains one of the most underprivileged districts in Malaysia. For rural families in the Bottom 40% (B40) income group, daily life is a constant struggle. From food insecurity and clean water shortages to unsafe infrastructure, breaking out of poverty feels almost impossible when basic survival is still a struggle.

In fact, in 2020, PressReader reported that Sabah’s poverty rate was a staggering 25.3%, three-times higher than the national Malaysian average of 8.4%. For rural communities especially, poverty isn’t just a phase—it’s a cycle passed from one generation to the next, slowly draining hope from their children’s future.
How The Poverty Cycle is Trapping Rural Sabahans
In places like Kadamaian, Kota Belud, the poverty cycle is made worse by inadequate and poor infrastructure—especially the lack of clean water. Over 50% of these rural communities in this area still lack access to basic essentials like clean water and fertile land, forcing families to frequently travel far out of their villages to buy food and water, lessening their already little earnings. It’s a cycle of spending that keeps them stuck at the bottom.

Sabah’s unemployment rate stands at a staggering 8%, double the national average. Most villagers are unskilled to have higher-paying jobs—they’re either unemployed or stuck in low-paying, unsustainable work like rubber tapping or cash crop farming. The household income in Sabah’s rural community can be as low as RM300 monthly—barely enough to cover the rising cost of basic living, especially for large families.
Economic instability only worsens the struggling families and children’s futures. as the rural poverty cycle has been normalised in their daily lives. Malaysia’s Rural B40 income growth is hindered by the challenge for survival.
How can families break free when the cycle only pulls them deeper each day?
